For 39 seasons, Shirley Orr was part of the fabric of Brunswick Athletic Club.
She was an athlete, a Life Member, a volunteer and a familiar, friendly face to generations of Brunswick athletes and families. But titles and records only tell part of Shirley’s story. Those who knew her will remember her warmth, her positivity, her genuine interest in others and, almost invariably, a smile and time for a chat.
It is with deep sadness that Brunswick Athletic Club marks Shirley’s passing and celebrates an extraordinary contribution to our club and to Victorian athletics.
From the sidelines to the track
Shirley’s journey with Brunswick began in 1987, initially as a supportive mum watching her three children take to the track.
It wasn’t long, however, before her own competitive spirit took over.
Shirley already had an impressive sporting background, having competed successfully at state level in lacrosse with Williamstown Women’s Lacrosse Club. At Brunswick, she brought that same determination to her training and fitness, eventually discovering a particular passion and talent for race walking.
Her performances would leave a lasting mark on the Brunswick record books.
Decades later, Shirley still holds numerous 40+ and 50+ club records, along with Brunswick’s enduring Open 1500m Walk record. She also won multiple medals at the Victorian Masters Championships.
Those achievements speak to Shirley the athlete. But her contribution to Brunswick extended far beyond anything recorded on a stopwatch or results sheet.
A Life Member and a life of service
Across nearly four decades, Shirley gave an extraordinary amount of herself to Brunswick Athletic Club.
Her contribution off the track was recognised when she was awarded Life Membership during the 1997–98 season, an honour reflecting the depth of her dedication and service to the club.
That commitment extended beyond Brunswick and into the wider athletics community.
From 1996 to 2004, Shirley worked with Athletics Victoria in roles including Secretary, Administration Officer and Registrar. Her knowledge, experience and commitment to the sport made her a highly valued member of the Victorian athletics community.
Always a smile. Always time for a chat.
For all the records, medals, titles and years of service, those who knew Shirley at Brunswick will remember something even more important.
They’ll remember Shirley.
Her smile. The conversations. The genuine interest she took in our athletes and their families. The way she remained connected to the people around her and the club she had been part of for so long.
Over 39 seasons, Shirley became one of those special people who are simply woven into the fabric of a club. Always interested. Always encouraging. Always ready for a chat.
When Shirley was diagnosed with cancer three years ago, she faced that challenge with the same grit, grace and positive outlook that characterised the way she lived her life.
On Friday, 25 September 2026, surrounded by the great joys of her life, her children Cameron, Steven and Narelle, and their families, Shirley passed away peacefully.
After 39 seasons with Brunswick, Shirley leaves behind a legacy that can be found in our record books, in the history of our club and, most importantly, in the memories of the many people who had the privilege of knowing her.
39 seasons. Forever part of Brunswick.
Our deepest condolences and love are with Shirley’s family and friends.
Rest in peace, Shirley. You will be greatly missed.
